Well I finally got it right.

MAYBE THIS INFO will help someone else.

I rebuilt a kernel and did not do make world.
However, I got the kernel to work finally.
Until I got the fstab right I could not boot the new kernel.
Anyways when I was unsuccessfull booting the new kernel
I had to reboot boot **** kernel.old ******
still had a problem with fstab.
had to mount -o rw -u /dev/wd0a /
mount -a -t ufs
swapon -a
cd /etc and vi fstab

Things just didn't work no matter what I did /dev/wd0s1a ...wd0s2a etc.
Until I went to /dev/ did:
sh MAKEDEV wd0s2a
changed the /etc/fstab to :
Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass#
/dev/wd0s2a / ufs rw 1 1
And rebooted.
Well what do you expect for a newbie. !
However all is working fine now...
If this info can help anyone else I'll be happy.
One day I plan on contributing to FreeBSD Project.
Maybe just log my experiences.. :-)

**** Thanks to all who helped me with other questions from 04/06/98 ***
