Mike,

I've had fantastic results with mySQL.  Personally, I like the C API a little
better than that of PostgreSQL.  For me, and for what I do with the database
I find it less cumbersome.  I've also used mSQL and PostgreSQL. Depending
on your needs, all of them are great.
