Oops! spoke too soon. I unplug the 'other end', and my machine now
reports at longish intervals:

Oct  7 20:18:59 gratis /kernel: R

Where with the old code the report would have been:

Sep 20 11:50:58 gratis /kernel: lp0: Too many errors, Going off-line.
