As confirmation of that, I've just booted a 4.3R system here using bootblocks taken straight off a FreeBSD 2.0 (January 1995) CD. This was all gone into in some detail on the mailing lists several years ago, when I related tests involving a whole range of 2.x bootblocks, all of which were able to load the (then 3.x) /boot/loader. At the time, no-one could come up with bootblocks which didn't work.
