In your log, the peer is requesting normal deflate compression too.  What 
does the negotiation look like if you leave things at their defaults ?

Are you saying that ping doesn't work and other things such as ftp do ?

This is wrong - pppd is incorrectly re-requesting deflate24 despite 
our rejecting it.
