Downloaded and burned a cd of File:FreeBSD-8.1-RELEASE-i386-livefs.iso. Booting from this CD opened the freebsd install menus. The disk label is for the live cd.

I am pretty sure I was connect to ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/8.1/
