Where should I look for redundant or > obsolete files? 5.2 GB is not all that large for a workstation, I would suggest you move at very least /usr/ports somewhere else and symlink it. And instead of deleting distfiles, run portsclean -CDP to clean your ports tree (particularly if you have java, where the source is a pain to redownload).
