We have already lost them. The CDA removes common carrier status
for store-and-forward distribution systems.

That means if someone posted something "patently offensive" (and you
though patenting sotfware was bad 8-)) to the list and it could be
looked up on the www page, or to netnews and you saw it while using
someon's server, the person running the www or news server could
be held liable under the CDA.

This was probably done to prevent a "cyberwar" tactic like "blacknet"
from being used, since it causes the server administrators to police
their users (the government doesn't want to do it; they know it's
not technically feasible to do).

Someone suggested PGP keys for posters for verification-based posting
acccess to the lists. I would be willing to consider using PGP keys
if they are ever transparently integrated in all the useful programs,
like "elm" and "Netscape". No, "metamail" is not transparently
integrated in "elm"... it;s OK for the occasional annoying MIME
message, but it sucks too badly for every message to have to use it.

In any case, the SPAM did not come from this list; if you wish to
discuss this further in a public FreeBSD forum, I suggest we move it
to "chat".
