why not put a line like:
                wait4(-1, &dummy, WNOHANG, 0);

at the end of the loop that does a package install... I have had this same problem with a daemon I wrote... so I simply added this line in the loop...  seemed to fix my problems...  also it would only clear the processes that have exited since you started the packet install...

just a thought... ttyl..
