I just installed XFree-4.2.0 from ports on G400 and it works just fine.
Initially DRI didn't work, but after I installed drm-kmod-0.9.5_1 it works
with no problems.  I didn't do anything special --- just followed the
instructions at http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~eanholt/dri/

I also have Asus mb, but I don't remember what model.  Dmesg has things like
this in it:
agp0: <VIA 82C8363 (Apollo KT133A) host to PCI bridge> mem 0xe4000000-
    0xe7ffffff at device 0.0 on pci0

I know this won't probably help you much, but at least you know that it
works on a similar system.
