This is very similar to my setup, with the exception that I'm
running a Gigabyte GA-7DX mobo and a 1333Mhz T-bird, with a 266Mhz FSB
(actually 133, but DDR makes it look like 266). You have the ALiMaGiK
chipset on your motherboard, and I have the AMD 761 chipset on mine.
These "nonstandard" chipsets are, IIUC, the crux of the problem, and
we may quite simply be hosed until there's ALiMaGiK and AMD 761
support in the FreeBSD bits of XFree86. (If I had time, I'd love to
write this code, but the paying job has been really grinding me up
lately.)

I've managed to get X and KDE2 to come up under 4.0.3_3, but they
don't run correctly: I have a big white square where the cursor
should be, buttons are missing in the GUI, and pixmaps are missing, too.

Under 4.1.0_4, X came up (with the big white square), but the
screen went black when I tried to exit X, and although the system was
still reachable via ssh, I couldn't get the console back without
rebooting (fortunately, I was able to ssh in and do a graceful
shutdown).

Tell me: are all 64MB of your Radeon detected? Only 32 are
detected on mine, both in Win2K and FreeBSD. It's a VIVO, and those
only come in the 64MB variant.

    I wonder if I have a bum board. :-(
