Thanks Rick.  I just tried that.

# dd if=floppies/kern.flp of=/dev/rfd0
dd: /dev/rfd0: Input/output error
1+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes transferred in 2.744556 secs (0 bytes/sec)

bummer.

For me, this is a matter of curiousity as opposed to needing disks.  I 
*can* make them with fdimage.  But not with dd.  I think this tells me the 
disk is rooted:

May  1 15:21:50 ns /kernel: fd0: recal failed ST0 
70<abnrml,seek_cmplt,equ_chck> cyl 0
May  1 15:21:51 ns last message repeated 3 times
May  1 15:21:51 ns /kernel: fd0c: hard error writing fsbn 0 (No status)

I'll keep trying floppies.
