What about Symbios? Their cards are supported and are pretty cheap. 
Here in the UK I paid UKP28.70 for a PCI ultra card without boot 
support. So far, so good .....

Have you looked at Advansys?
I have never used them, but from what I gather they are very simmilar
to Adaptec. 

I seem to recall it was founded by a group of ex-adaptec engineers.
