I usually prefer NFS when given the choice (setup is easier, at least to me).

I've just copied over the complete subdirectory, so here is how much
space you'll need:

scully: {109} du -k /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE
18218 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/bin
2899 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/floppies
318 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/compat20
437 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/compat21
4267 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/ports
37658 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/src
3011 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/games
3780 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/manpages
1162 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/proflibs
1337 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/doc
557 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/compat1x
1407 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/dict
1649 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/info
3104 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/catpages
1678 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/des
81565 /pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE

You, of course, only need directories for distributions you actually use.
