gzip isn't compatible with compress, though gunzip handles
_uncompression_ of compressed files.  If anyone still relies on the
"compress" format, they'd be screwed by such a change (does anyone?).

Path of least resistance is probably just to upgrade it.  I wouldn't
mind having a compress that was twice as fast for wu-ftpd alone.
