It could still be PAM, as your old xdm was probably linked against Linux-PAM while your new xdm is linked against OpenPAM. Any authentication-related problem you may encounter is probably linked, directly or indirectly, to something I'm working on or have worked on in the past six months. I can't fix bugs I don't know about, though, and I don't read minds, so please report them when you find them.
