The CPU's runs really hot.. so I'm forced to use an UP kernel, where the HLT
instruction works, and keeps the CPU's a bit colder..

What CPUs are you using ?  What kind of load are you putting on your box ?

I run several SMP machines under FreeBSD.  If you have proper cooling, you
should have no problem under full load.  I always purchase nice heatsink fan
combos with higher RPM speeds than OEM fan/heatsink combos.  For an SMP box
it's worth it to spend an extra $40 on fans.
