Did you try pressing return to get a new prompt?  I notice that the 
Password: prompt takes a while to appear for the first time, but it is there.

I just ran /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm.  You may want to try commenting out the 
line in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers.  I haven't tried that though.
