Yes.  Mount kern.flp (it's a simple UFS filesystem) and see what's in it.

How do you gzip your kernel?  You can use gzip(1) to gzip kernel, and
you can't use kgzip(8) for that.

I think so too, I know that many users fetch ISO image instead of
the distribution itself, from snapshots.jp.FreeBSD.org :-)
