OK, here is the followup report to my initial posting.. :) The recommendation that -O2 was breaking things was correct on the Alpha, and I have actually done a complete re-install and make world just using -O and all seems happy now. I know the FBSD project doesn't condone the use of -O2, but from all my experiences with the Intel port this works just fine.
