I verified that the "Fatal trap 1: privileged instruction fault while in kernel mode" I reported (I haven't seen the report yet; hopefully I'll see it soon) is indeed in this morning's kernel and not in the new SCSI configuration code. However, I think it unwise to add my code when I know that kernels built will fail. I'll wait until tomorrow to commit the changes. If anyone is interested there is a full set of patches on freefall in my home directory in ~dufault/PATCHES. I was just about to commit them when I found out the kernel was broken.
