pppoed is a PPPoE *server*, not a client.  The client is ppp(8).

If your DSL provider uses PPPoE (some do, some use other protocols),
then you can use ppp.  4.0-RELEASE is very old, but I think pppoe
support worked back then.  It certainly does now.
