It uses short-term memory first then long-term memory.
While on the topic. Did you unplug your ethernet cable? If you did, that may be your problem. Unplugging your ethernet cable can cause your memory to leak out into the ether. See pp 234 (Section 14.15) of UNIX Power Tools about a similar discussion :-)
Seriously, Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System (Marshall Kirk McKusick) discusses this topic at length. System Performance and Tuning (Mike Loukides) discusses the three thresholds (DESFREE, LOTSFREE, and MINFREE) that UNIX uses and any other associated controls on VM algorithms. These are highly recommended reading to understand this relatively complex topic.
