Seppo Kallio stands accused of saying: > > We are planning to by some Pentium based micros for Unix+X workstations and > use FreeBSD in them. > > We want to use tools like vic, vat, nv, sd and 24 bit colors with about > 1200*900 resolution. > > 1. Is GUS PnP Pro a good solution for sound in/out? I've heard people having problems with the PnP GUS cards. The GUS MAX is the card to have, if you can get it. > 2. Is ATI WinTurbo with 4M VRAM good solution? Is someone using it > and getting 24 bit colors to the screen with about 1152*900 resolution > (or better)? No. Use S3-based cards like the #9 Motion 771 or Diamond Stealth64 VRAM. The XFree S3 server kicks serious butt. I've had great results with one of the #9 cards at 1280x1024x16 on a cheap Sony 17sf. Mind you, the PCI S3 DRAM cards are awfully quick as well; unless performance is a critical issue I'd strongly encourage you to consider evaluating them as well. > Seppo -- ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@atrad.adelaide.edu.au [[ ]] Genesis Software genesis@atrad.adelaide.edu.au [[ ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ ]] realtime instrument control (ph/fax) +61-8-267-3039 [[ ]] Collector of old Unix hardware.
