I've heard people having problems with the PnP GUS cards.  The GUS MAX is
the card to have, if you can get it.

No.  Use S3-based cards like the #9 Motion 771 or Diamond Stealth64 VRAM.
The XFree S3 server kicks serious butt.  I've had great results with one
of the #9 cards at 1280x1024x16 on a cheap Sony 17sf.

Mind you, the PCI S3 DRAM cards are awfully quick as well; unless performance
is a critical issue I'd strongly encourage you to consider evaluating
them as well.
