It's actually the result of our strong intellectual property laws (as much as they seem to have gone too far these days), and blind enforcement of the social contract. Actually, except in one or two largely Socialist states, where you can't save yourself from it, India has a poor track record on uniform enforcement of the social contract. Linux Winmodem drivers actually tend to work better on FreeBSD; it's a timing thing.
