I'm having exactly the same problem with the regular mozilla port, and
last time i started xmms it also caused a complete freeze.  I couldn't
ping the machine or get a remote shell with ssh.  It's difficult to see
what causes the freeze too, when it locks hard enough that rebooting is
your only recourse.  I'm in the middle of portupgrade -farR, but don't
know if that will help...

i cvsupped and rebuilt world/kernel about two days ago to 5.2.1-CURRENT.
