This question is not easy to answer.  There are several variables
involved, depending on what you want to accomplish with your system.  I
think the best way to figure out which is best for your situation is to
try both and keep the one you are more comfortable with.  I have tried
both and determined that FreeBSD is best for my current situation.  The
single most important thing you need to do, prior to trying either, is to
BACK-UP YOUR DATA from your current system!
