You might want to check out magicfilter rather than apsfilter.  I use
magicfilter on both my linux and freebsd systems.  Don't know if it does
what you want, but it surely doesn't have the dependency overhead that
apsfilter does and I haven't found anything that I can't print with it
and gs.
