 burncd... it's the base system.

I should also include this line from dmseg:

 atapci0: <Intel PIIX3 ATA controller> port 0xf000-0xf00f at device 7.1 on
pci0

So as suspected, it's definitely old hardware and the IDE controller only
support ATA33.

As far as I know, the errors only started appearing when I went to write
some .wav files to the cd-rom.

acd1: WRITE_BIG - MEDIUM ERROR asc-0c ascq=09 error=04
ad0: WRITE command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting
ata0: resetting devices .. ata0-master: DMA limited to UDMA33, non-ATA66
compliant cable

and it repeats.

I tried burning to 4 different CD's tonight with all the same errors.

The new HD does work, even with the 40-pin cable on it.. so I'm wondering
how I can get the CD-Burner to 'get along'

If that means taking the spare cd-reader out, that's ok.

That would leave the new Maxtor on IDE CH1

and the CD-Burner on IDE CH2. Somehow I think I recall reading it's
better to have the drive and cd-burner on separate IDE channels.
