Per the handbook and the kernel (GENERIC) the use of the 'TERM=scoansi'
will solve some problems with full screen programs. 

Because my ISP uses 'Linux' I finally setteled on 386at-m as my term type
for pine and vi (I telnet to his mail server to read my mail)
