well, I have the same problems with *one* of my PCs, so it could be
hardware-related. Have you checked your cables? I remember a discussion
on -questions regarding this issue; some people stated that reliable
operation of the floppy drive requires a semi real-time OS (read MS-DOS),
not a multitasking OS like Unix, and I was pretty convinced by that.

lpr submits a file to the printer spooler, lpd. To use lpr, you *need* lpd
up and running. How are you starting lpd?

As a general rule, please give the exact commands you use and the replies
you get, if you want us to be able to diagnose what is going wrong.
