1) On my system anyway, I can set ttyvb (in /etc/ttys) from "off" to "on", and xdm will start up (although I find xdm rather flaky and I prefer the security/look of the regular login :) 2) My /etc/ttys is no different from the default on my home machine, save that I turned on more virtual consoles. Just turn the line that has "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon" from off to on. It may not be on ttyvb on your system, since I have added more virtual consoles. 3) Is PPP set to the correct serial port? Look in /etc/ppp/ppp.conf. You can also set this value with (assuming your modem is on com1) set device /dev/cuaa0 Then when you type "term" then type "AT", it should say OK. 4) As far as I know, PPP doesn't have anything to do with ttys :) /etc/ttys specifies which terminals are available for login. If you still can't get it working, post again, I'll be happy to mail you a copy of my ttys (the only reason I don't know is because I don't think you need it) -rob ( www.namodn.com ) ( mailto : robert@namodn.com ) On Wed, 2 Dec 1998, larry_nilsen wrote: > Hi first thing im running FreeBSD2.2.7 > 1)what do i put in my ttys conf file to make xdm > be the first thing to loadup so i can login and do > password and be automatically in xwindows. > > 2)is there a way you can send me a working example > of the ttys - config. that would be of great help then > i could copy it like mine using ee editor. > > 3) also when i type ppp at the prompt. it says > pppONSeeker>then i type term and then it > just hangs with out comming back with a OK! > then i have to hit ~. to get my prompt back. > > 4) i believe also that ppp along with xdm has > somthing to do with my ttys config. somthing > to do with secure/insecure on/off on different > areas of my ttys file. > > 5) i believe if i have a working example to copy > from i might have this accomplished. > > 1)Answer. > > > > > > > > 2)Answer > > > > > > > > 3)Answer. > > > > > > > > 4)Answer. > > > > > > > > > > 5)ttys example > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
