The instructions are a bit out of date.  I would say,

echo "exec /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session" > ~/.xinitrc

But if you don't have gnome-session, then this won't work either.=20
gnome-session is installed as part of gnomecore.  Make sure you have
that installed on your machine.

To tell you the truth, there are some problems installing GNOME from
packages, too.  We recommend you build GNOME from an up-to-date ports
tree.  Check out http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq.html#q1 for our
recommended GNOME install instructions.
