I don't see the problem.  For example:

# Basic system aliases -- these MUST be present
MAILER-DAEMON: postmaster


Of course, that's followed by:

postmaster: root

in the case of the machine in question... but sendmail doesn't care
about the length of what's on the right-hand side of the ":" (within
reason, anyway).
