I get the following error from sendmail when I use the above.

554 /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 742: Inappropriate use of $: on LHS
554 /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 743: Inappropriate use of $: on LHS

Lines 742-744 of sendmail.cf are
R$=N$:                  $#local $: $1
R$=N < @ $=w . >$:      $#local $: $1
Rbb + $+ < @ $=w . >    $#cyrusbb $: $1
