I just thought I'd add a bit more detail to the previous response.

You should follow the directions at
http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/kernelconfig.html.  You have to use the
kernel config file to make a new kernel.

Another tip, already briefly mentioned - try not to use 'root' as your
normal login.  A good solution is to make a regular user in the group
'wheel' so that you can 'su root' when necessary.
