I have now gotten DRI working by omitting one step outlined in http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=1125326+0+archive/2000/freebsd-questions/20000903.freebsd-questions. "* Edit /boot/loader.rc and add the lines: load agp load mga So that upon reboot, the new kernel modules are automatically loaded" Leaving /boot/loader.rc untouched makes everything work. The mga and drm kernel-modules are loaded by X as far a I can tell.
