I found wine works quite respectably for games like Tetris, on a 200
MHz Pentium with 32 MB RAM. That was a long time ago.  Those things
don't use either DirectX or sound, but I think wine supports both.
I've heard VMWare needs much more RAM to run. Probably depends on how
powerful your machine is...

I'd say no harm in trying out wine, it's free. And if it
can be used to run the release version Corel's WordPerfect Office,
it can't be too bad.
