What about just building them with a different --prefix setting?

	configure --prefix=/usr/local/tcl7.4

Or are things more complicated than that when dealing with packages? That 
would probably be my first attempt at resolving the problem if I were building 
these things on my own systems. Then you put in a /usr/local/tcl that is a 
symlink to whatever you want the default to be.
