try running xev/xmodmap. when i press alt/gr i get the following
line

state 0x2000, keycode 113 (keysym 0xff7e, Mode_switch),
same_screen YES,

if your alt/gr key doesn't create the above keycode, try using
xmodmap to redefine the right mapping.
