Yes you can.  As root run xf86config.  Be sure a copy of the file 
XF86Config goes into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11.   After that use startx to run 
and get you started.

Can I set up and configure X windows while my FreeBSD machine is

sending and receiving email as well as popping?  Will I need to reboot?
