Actually, It's quite consistent if you forget the CD's altogether and just do an FTP install over internet. Yes it's slow (6 1/2 hours on dialup) but you can do something else while it's happening. Or you can take the PC to your buddy's place to do it. You can just get the basic system & man pages and install other stuff as you need it once that's done. (ports, linux, X, kernel source).
