Yup. Been there, done that, my butt still hurts. ;(

Another case it breaks is if ltmain.sh is used as a dependency. Make has a
hard time making ${LIBTOOLFLAGS}. 

Will, is this something that might be addressed while you've got the patient
open for AUTOCONF surgery?
