To follow up my own message, I compiled the exact same kernel 
configuration from 2.2-ALPHA and it works perfectly on this system.  
So something bad has happened between ALPHA and BETA.  Guess it's 
time to start diff-ing the kernel source trees to see what's changed 
:-(
