In case anyone is worried by the number of local changes I've introduced
to grep, my main reason for doing so is that GNU grep is not being properly
maintained these days. We want the features from 2.5.1, but it was a rather
buggy release. With no signs of a newer release on the way (no commits to GNU
grep CVS repo for almost a year), we have little choice but to commit the
various fixes that are circulating. If an updated version of grep ever comes
out, it's likely that we'll be able to discard all of my local changes.
