i had tried all combinations of gettext{,-old} before and after
"uber-gettext-patch".  as stated earlier, creating a link for
"libintl.so.1" (to "libintl.so.2") works.

problem, as i had experienced, is not upgrade of gettext* ports.  it
is that other/some software is looking for "libintl.so.1", not
"libintl.so" or "libintl.so.2".
