PowerPC will actually need elf2xcoff more than elf2aout.  "Old World"
(ie beige box) Macintoshes all have OpenFirmware versions below 3.0
which only support loading XCOFF binaries.  As of 3.0, OpenFirmware
supported both XCOFF and ELF.
