>Environment:
Both
FreeBSD 9.0-BETA3 #0 i386 and amd64 (several different machines, no GENERIC kernels); this problem seems to have existed for a couple of months (in -CURRENT / 9.0). This config was without problems in 8-STABLE.
>Description:
Please see this thread on the FreeBSD Forums:

http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=27108
>How-To-Repeat:
Set ifconfig_nic0 and ifconfig_nic0_alias0 entries in rc.conf, and reboot. The primary IP address comes up, the alias is absent, and no activity can be found in dmesg -a.
>Fix:
Using the ipv4_addrs_nic0 type syntax does not have this problem. Creating the alias from the command line is also not a problem.
