Does the example in the handbook not work ?
Try getting the latest version of ppp (you didn't say what version of 
FreeBSD you're running) from http://www.freebsd.org/~brian and 
following the instructions in the current handbook *exactly*.

If this doesn't work, you'll need to post your config and your log 
file with "set log phase chat connect lcp ipcp ccp".  If you can't 
mount your DOS harddisk (mount -t msdos /dev/wd0s1 /dos), then use a 
floppy (mount -t msdos /dev/fd0a /mnt) to record the info.
