Try getting the latest version of ppp (you didn't say what version of FreeBSD you're running) from http://www.freebsd.org/~brian and following the instructions in the current handbook *exactly*. If this doesn't work, you'll need to post your config and your log file with "set log phase chat connect lcp ipcp ccp".
