I thought the 1540 was the first in line.

I'd guess not, if it still works.  I'd guess that there were minor
differences in the 154xA microcode, and that you have a very early
version.

Be warned, however, that there's a bug in the driver that hits many
154xAs: it writes a block of 16 0xff characters at not-quite-random
places in large transfers (typically after 32 kB).  You might like to
check that with non-critical data first.  It would be interesting to
know whether it happens to your version.
